Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study 2015
TIMSS 2015 is the sixth cycle of the IEA Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). Conducted every four years since 1995, TIMSS has been a valuable vehicle for studying international trends in mathematics and science achievement at the fourth and eighth grades.
TIMSS 2015 will report overall achievement as well as results according to four international benchmarks (advanced, high, medium, and low), by major content domains (e.g., number, algebra, and geometry in mathematics, and earth science, biology, and chemistry in science), and by cognitive domains (knowing, applying, and reasoning). Like the previous TIMSS assessments, the study will collect detailed information about curriculum and curriculum implementation, instructional practices, and school resources.
TIMSS Numeracy 2015
For countries where students are still developing fundamental mathematics skills, IEA's new TIMSS Numeracy assessment (designed to be administered at the fourth, fifth, or sixth grade) concentrates on measuring children's numeracy learning outcomes, including fundamental mathematical knowledge, procedures, and problem-solving strategies.
TIMSS Advanced 2015
In 2015, TIMSS Advanced will be reunited with TIMSS. Previously conducted in 1995 and 2008, TIMSS Advanced 2015 will assess final-year secondary students' achievement in advanced mathematics and physics. The study will also collect policy-relevant data about curriculum emphasis, technology use, and teacher preparation and training.
The international target population for TIMSS consists of students in the fourth and eighth grades. Countries also have the option of administering TIMSS Numeracy or the TIMSS fourth grade assessment to students in the fifth or sixth grade, or the TIMSS eighth grade assessment at the ninth grade. The target population for TIMSS Advanced is students in their final year of secondary school.

TIMSS 2015 was initiated in February 2013 at the first national research coordinators meeting. Framework and instrument development work are being carried out in 2013. The field test will be conducted in March–April 2014. The data collection for the main survey will be carried out in October–December 2014 (southern hemisphere countries) and March–June 2015 (northern hemisphere countries). The international reports will be released in December 2016, followed by the international database and user guide in February 2017.
TIMSS 2015 is coordinated by the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center at Boston College, United States. Other members of the TIMSS 2015 consortium are the IEA Secretariat, the IEA Data Processing and Research Center, Statistics Canada, and the Educational Testing Service. The study co-directors are Dr Michael Martin and Dr Ina Mullis. As in all IEA studies, the international coordination will be carried out in cooperation with the national research coordinators of participating countries.
The TIMSS 2015 projects are funded by IEA and fees from participating countries, with support from the National Center for Education Statistics of the United States Department of Education.
Participation fees are assessed in two currencies and on a yearly basis for each of the four years of the project (2013–2016). The TIMSS 2015 participation fee is USD 25,000 and EUR 25,000 per year for one grade. The yearly participation fee for TIMSS Advanced 2015 is USD 37,500 and EUR 37,500. For countries participating in TIMSS 2015 at two grades or TIMSS 2015 and TIMSS Advanced 2015 together, there is a reduction in fees.
