Gordon Ambach
Retired in June 2001. Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) 1987-2001, and Commissioner of Education for the New York State (1970-1987). Serves on numerous policy and advisory panels on international studies in education, educational assessment, and educational reform and improvement. In 1990 appointed as representative of the United States to the IEA General Assembly and has served on its Standing Committee since 1991. Played a key role in transforming IEA into a professional organization. Contributed significantly to the creation of an IEA-policy for the cycle of studies and to the development of links with funders.
Zoltán Báthory
Professor of Education, University of Szeged. Affiliated with IEA since 1968, and was a representative of Hungary to General Assembly until 1994. Member of the Academia Europeana, Chairman of the Educational Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and member of various other scholarly boards and committees. His main field of interest is the theory of teaching and learning, curriculum development and educational assessment. He published 8 books and more than 150 articles and papers.
Albert E Beaton
Professor Emeritus at the Graduate School of Education at Boston College, and former director of Boston College's Center for the Study of Testing, Evaluation, and Educational Policy. Spent 27 years at the Educational Testing Service (ETS), where he directed research in psychometrics and data analysis, and, later, was director of design, research, and data analysis for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Chairman of IEA's Technical Advisory Committee (1989-1993). International Study Director of the IEA Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS 1995).
Benjamin Bloom
(1913-1999)
Charles H Swift Distinguished Service Professor of Education at the University of Chicago at Hyde Park. At this university he founded and chaired the program in Measurement, Evaluation and Statistical Analysis (MESA). Founding member of IEA (1958). Initiator of the IEA Pilot Study (1960) and First International Mathematics Study (1964). Consultant on evaluation and curriculum to nations throughout the world. Past President of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). Member of the United States National Academy of Education. Author and co-author of 17 major books.
Christiane Brusselmans-Dehairs
Retired in 2007. Since 1970, as a researcher at the University of Gent, involved in IEA. Researcher in the Six-Subject Study (1970–71), Second International Mathematics Study (1980–82) and Computer in Education Study (1989, 1992). National Research Coordinator for the IEA Trends in Mathematics and Science Project (1995, 1999, and 2003). IEA General Assembly Representative for the Flemish Community (1992–1997). In September 1995 elected member of the IEA Standing Committee, representing both the Flemish and Walloon communities of Belgium. Author of numerous IEA related publications and reports.

After teaching high school science for 19 years, held senior positions in Curriculum Development in the Ministry of Education of New Zealand over the next 18 years, retiring in 1985. In 1968 appointed New Zealand National Technical Officer for the IEA Six Subject Survey (Civic Education, French and English as Foreign Languages, Literature, Reading Comprehension, and Science). Overall responsibility for editing and publishing Six Subject Survey reports. Executive Director IEA, Stockholm (1972 – 1974). Representative of New Zealand to the IEA General Assembly (1974–1985), member of the Standing Committee. Initiator and the Chair of the IEA International Project Council for the Second International Mathematics Study (SIMS, 1978–1985).

Aldo Visalberghi
(1917-2007)
Until his death, Professor Emeritus of the University of Rome. In 1943 he fought with the partisans in the liberation war against the Nazi-fascists. Arrested twice, and released in 1945. Fulbright fellow in the USA (1952-53), Professor of Education at the State University of Milan and of History of Education at the University of Turin. President of the Italian IEA-related centre, the European Center for Education (CEDE) in Frascati, from 1979 to 1991, participated in the IEA studies from the very beginning of the Association activities (Six Subject Study), and was Director of the journal "Scuola e città" (School and City). Author of many publications.
Richard M Wolf
(1934-2004)
Retired Professor of Psychology and Education. 1968-1999 at Teachers College, Columbia University. Chair of the Department of Measurement, Evaluation and Statistics. Research in measurement and evaluation. Participated in the IEA First Mathematics Study (FIMS, 1964), Six Subject Survey (1970-1971), Second International Science Study (SISS, 1983-1986), and Computers in Education Study (COMPED, 1989, 1992). Member of the International Academy of Education. Chair IEA Publication and Editorial Committee. Authored more than 50 publications, consultant to various national and international organizations in education.
