10 years of IEA IRC

The IEA International Research Conference (IEA IRC) will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2023. To mark this special occasion, we are organizing an anniversary conference around Researching Education and Learning to celebrate our vision and accomplishments.

Origins of the IRC

In the early 2000s, Dr. Constantinos Papanastasiou recognized the need for an education research conference specifically catered to the secondary analysis of IEA data. He founded the IRC to fill this niche, providing an international forum for the exchange of ideas and information on critical issues in education evolving from secondary analyses of data from IEA studies. Because of its international scope, the conference also aimed to examine issues in both a comparative and global context.

The first IRC was held in Nicosia, Cyprus, in 2004. The biennial conference has since been hosted in diverse locations around the world: Washington D.C., Taipei City, Gothenburg, Singapore, Cape Town, Prague, Copenhagen, Dubai, and soon Ireland.

I am extremely impressed with how the IRC conference has established itself as a high-caliber international research conference. It has expanded greatly since the first conference that took place in Cyprus in 2004, and the ways in which the IEA data are utilized for the improvement of education worldwide have never ceased to amaze me.
