IEA at Events in 2022

As IEA staff saw a return to more in-person meetings and conferences in 2022, we look back on some of the highlights and thank our network members and partner organizations for their continued work on improving teaching and learning using IEA data as well as inviting us to their collaborative events.

REDS

At IEA, 2022 kicked off full steam ahead with the release of the REDS (Responses to Educational Disruption Survey) International Report and International Database on the International Day of Education, 24 January. Connected to REDS, in 2022, IEA Executive Director, Dirk Hastedt presented on the UAE results from the survey at a national event in Dubai in March, hosted by the UAE Ministry of Education. Colleagues from the Research and Analysis Unit at IEA presented on REDS in August in Zambia at the 38th Annual Conference of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa and in October in Rome at the INVALSI Data: A Tool for Teaching and Scientific Research conference.

Releasing New IEA Publications

Among other events, IEA Directors and staff were delighted to attend CIES, AERA, WERA, and NCME meetings in-person in the United States this year after global traveling restrictions caused by COVID-19 led to the meetings being held virtually in 2021. While our researchers presented at multiple sessions, IEA Communications and ILSA Gateway colleagues managed a successful conference booth where the first IEA Teacher Snippets were publicly presented.

Following the release of the Teacher Snippets, the first volume of IEA Research for Educators, titled Putting PIRLS to Use in Classrooms Across the Globe, was released in June connected to the 25 Years Symposium of Expertisecentrum Nederlands, Dutch language center. The book co-author and Director of IEA Amsterdam, Andrea Netten, had the pleasure of launching the book series at the Symposium in Nijmegen.

General Assembly Meeting

International collaboration is at the heart of IEA’s research and activities. The 63rd General Assembly meeting hosted by the National Centre for External Evaluation of Education in Croatia in October saw presentations on the use and value of IEA data by our partners European Commission, Nordic Council of Ministers, UNESCO, and the World Education Research Association (WERA), in addition to updates from within the IEA network. We thank our partners for their time at the GA and their continued interest in IEA studies.

Partner Events

Our Senior Research and Liaison Adviser, Paulína Koršňáková, also had the pleasure of attending the European Educational Research Association’s (EERA) Annual Conference in Yerevan, Armenia, in August as well as the #ResNet conference of Education International, where she led a workshop on IEA teacher resources.

More recently, IEA was invited to attend the World Conference on Early Childhood Care and Education (WCECCE) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. IEA's Andrea Netten and Paulína Koršňáková were delighted to participate in sessions on effective early childhood care and education policies across all regions and countries, and we thank UNESCO for hosting such an important event! Additionally, the location of WCECCE offered a welcome opportunity to meet with our colleagues from the National Center for International Studies on the Assessment of Quality of Education in Uzbekistan who administer IEA studies at the national level.

Finally, we would like to express our thanks to Springer for disseminating IEA open-access books from the Research for Education and Research for Educators series at their BERA (British Educational Research Association) booth in September and the International Meeting of the Psychometric Society (IMPS) for inviting IEA Research and Analysis colleagues to speak at the University of Bologna meeting in July.

IEA Directors and researchers look forward to continuing to exchange ideas on educational research and policy in 2023. Would you like to invite one of IEA Directors or research experts to speak at your event? Reach out to us at secretariat@iea.nl and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

To get the most out of collaboration with the IEA research network, make sure to submit your proposal and register to the 10th IEA International Research Conference (IEA IRC) taking place in Dublin, 28–30 June 2023!
