IEA Publications 2023 Round-Up

Looking back at 2023, we are pleased to have published three Compass: Briefs in Education, 37 articles in the IERI journal, launched the first R&D (Research and Development) outputs, and the translated Arabic version of the first volume in the Research for Educators series.

Compass: Briefs in Education

This year, Compass Briefs aims to answer the following questions among others:

  • What impacts does cyberbullying have on mathematics achievement among eighth-grade students?
  • How prepared were schools and teachers for remote teaching?
  • How do early learning activities impact math and science development in girls and boys?

The open-access, short-format series aims to link IEA findings to questions in education policy debates around the world. Compass Briefs can be translated, for more information, please contact l.cheeseman@iea.nl.

IERI Journal

2023 celebrated the 10th anniversary of the IERI Large-scale assessment in education journal. The journal continues to develop and grow with a 23% increase of articles published in 2023 compared to 2022. Find out more about submitting an article to the journal and its scope.

This year also saw the completion of the special issue: Leveraging large-scale assessments for effective and equitable school practices: The case for Nordic Countries. This issue has eight articles that seek to find out how different aspects of school systems can be optimized to provide excellent learning opportunities across different groups of students.    

Research and Development Outputs

2023 also saw the first outputs from IEA’s R&D fund. Following on from the success of Call 1—launched in 2021—Call 2 awardees are well on their way to finalizing their studies and have submitted an available outcome. The first four open-access outcomes are currently live on the R&D page 

  • Using Neural Network Classification for Automate Scoring of Image Responses in TIMSS 2023, by Lale Khorramdel, Matthias von Davier, and Lillian Tyack of the TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center at Boston College. 
  • Interpretable and Accurate Scaling in Large-scale Assessment: A Variable Selection Approach to Latent Regression, authored by Yunxiao Chen, Montonori Oka of the London School of Economic and Political Science, and Matthias von Davier of the TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center at Boston College. 
  • An Examination of the Identification Problem Arising from Unit Nonresponse in ILSA Studies, authored by Diego Cortes, Jeff Dominitz, Maximiliano Romero, and Sabine Meinck of IEA.
  • Student’s Behavioral Patterns in a Computational Thinking Interactive Task: Using Process Data in ICILS 2018 with Sequence Mining, authored by Qiwei He and Eugenio Gonzalez of Educational Testing Service.  

Research for Educators Volume One Translated into Arabic

The first volume in the Research for Educators Series has been translated into Arabic by Zuwaina Saleh Al-Maskari of the Ministry of Education, Oman. IEA is grateful to Zuwaina and the team for taking the time to translate the book which is available for teachers in Oman and Arabic-speaking countries. IEA is grateful to all authors who author IEA publications and contribute to the journal and IEA initiatives.
