November 2020: Gender gaps in science are not a given

Evidence on international trends in gender gaps in science over 20 years

IEA’s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) data from the late 1990s onwards, show that an increasing number of countries are achieving gender equity in students’ science achievement in grade four and eight. Although there is a persisting trend of an overrepresentation of male students in the group of high achievers in science, female students are catching up.
