The “Greening” of Education: Final Day of the IRC

IRC logo, small circle and event details

The final day of the IRC began with an insightful keynote from Prof. Dr. Aaron Banavot. In keeping with the conference theme, Researching Education for Sustainable Futures, the keynote session delved into cross-national research by the Monitoring and Evaluating Climate Communication and Education Project and UNESCO into the greening of the school curriculum in both primary and secondary education. The session also discussed a new Greening Education Indicator relevant to the measurement and monitoring of Sustainable Development Goal Targets 4.7 and 13.3.

"We can view 'greening education' as an umbrella to encapsulate other historical terms and bring them under one communication tool."

The winner of the Constantinos Papanastasiou was awarded by popular vote, to Vasiliki Pitsia for her poster submission entitled Student and Parent Reading Attitudes and Behaviours and Their Interrelationships Across PIRLS Cycles in Ireland. Congratulations to Vasiliki!

Thank you to our esteemed hosts, INVALSI and Roma Tre University, for hosting the 11th IEA IRC in the heart of Rome. Throughout the week, delegates have benefited from authentic experiences, a workshop on how teacher practices can be supported by using data from large-scale assessments, insights from two keynote speakers, and a social program that provided ample opportunity to network and experience Rome.

Thank you to all attendees who continue to develop the IRC into the forum that exchanges ideas and information on critical education issues via your engagement and contributions. This week has been dedicated to discussing sustainability in education and how research from large-scale assessments (such as the assessments conducted by IEA) can be used to inform policy and practice.

We are delighted to announce that the 12th IEA IRC will take place in Thailand and will be hosted by the Office of Education Council and Chulalongkorn University in 2027. We are so excited to take the IRC to Thailand and will provide more information in due course.
