IGLU/PIRLS Germany

The IGLU study (Internationale Grundschul-Lese-Untersuchung) is the German “offshoot” of the international large-scale assessment PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study). IGLU/PIRLS Germany aims to survey and examine fourth-grade students´reading skills in an internationally-comparable environment. The study is conducted every five years since 2001 and the next IGLU/PIRLS main survey is scheduled for 2026. A smaller field trial will be conducted in selected federal states in spring 2025 to try out the newly developed test items for the upcoming main survey.

The Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs in Germany (KMK) supports Germany's participation in IGLU. The KMK and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) fund the study.
