The International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) is an international study on civic and citizenship education initiated by the IEA.
The study examines how eighth-grade students in different countries are prepared for their role as citizens, what knowledge, beliefs, and dispositions toward action they have regarding democracy and society, and what role schools play in this process. It thus provides a foundation for research on political socialization and supports educational practice with empirical evidence.
Germany has been participating in the study since 2021 with selected federal states. In the upcoming main study of ICCS 2027, Germany will participate for the first time with a sample covering all federal states.
Further information can be found on the ICCS Germany website.
The scientific leadership of the study in Germany is held by Prof. Dr. Hahn-Laudenberg at the Institute of Political Science at the University of Münster, in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Hermann Josef Abs from the Institute of Educational Science at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
Within the framework of ICCS Germany, the IEA is responsible for field operations, coding, and data management up to the delivery of the datasets to the scientific study leadership.
