World Environment Day: How much did students learn about environmental topics?

As the climate crisis is communicated with increasing urgency in recent years, environmental education has never been more important; but do students believe they have learned to protect the environment, and how well do they answer environment-based assessment items?

Data from IEA’s international large-scale assessment study on civic and citizenship education (ICCS) shows the extent to which around 93,000 Grade 8 students around the world believe they learned to protect the environment, shown in the visual above. And results to environmental science questions from the latest mathematics and science study (TIMSS) show a great range in whether students were able to answer a Grade 4 and Grade 8 assessment item correctly across the world.
