With the release of the TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal International Database, IEA invites proposals for a new volume in the IEA Research for Education series using data from the TIMSS 2023 longitudinal (TIMSS-L) study.
The Call for Proposals, Understanding Learning Growth through TIMSS Longitudinal Data, encourages researchers to examine student learning growth in mathematics and science over one year of schooling. Proposals should use the longitudinal nature of the TIMSS-L data to address broad, policy-relevant research questions.
IEA welcomes proposals that explore topics such as factors associated with differential learning growth across education systems, changes in achievement gaps over time, differences between predictors of learning gains and achievement levels, and the relationship between instructional practices and student learning growth. Researchers may adapt or expand on these themes or propose other innovative lines of inquiry. While research should draw primarily on TIMSS-L data, the use of additional relevant data sources is encouraged where appropriate.
Competitive proposals will clearly articulate a theoretical framework, engage critically with the TIMSS assessment framework and longitudinal design, define policy-relevant research questions, and propose robust analytical methods suited to longitudinal data.
Full proposal details can be download via the Call for Proposals.
The TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal International Database
Following the release of the TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal International Report last December, IEA is delighted to share the TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal International Database (IDB). The TIMSS-L IDB is open access and includes achievement and contextual data for students assessed in the fifth and ninth grades. The database combines mathematics and science assessment results with student, home, teacher, school, and national context questionnaire data for all participating countries and benchmarking systems. Data are available in R, SPSS, and SAS formats and can be analyzed using the IEA International Database (IDB) Analyzer, with guidance provided in the TIMSS 2023 User Guide.
The TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal Study was an optional extension of TIMSS 2023, designed to measure learning growth by reassessing the same cohort of students one year later. Together, the database and this call for proposals offer a valuable opportunity to advance international research on student learning growth and educational effectiveness.
