TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal

Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study 2023 Longitudinal Study
TIMSS continues to demonstrate leadership and innovation in comparative international assessments by introducing an optional international study of student progress based on TIMSS 2023. The TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal Study (TIMSS-L) is an optional extension of TIMSS 2023 that explores student learning gains over one year of schooling. This study is designed to measure growth in student achievement by assessing the same sample of students assessed in TIMSS 2023 one year later when the students are in the fifth and ninth grades.

Measuring Growth

The study offers participating countries a valuable opportunity to examine student progress over time, deepening insights into learning growth and educational effectiveness.

TIMSS-L will provide countries with high-quality, internationally-comparable longitudinal data that:

  • Contextualize achievement gaps and provide insight into how to address them
  • Make information about achievement growth visible and available to education stakeholders
  • Use longitudinal evidence related to home, classroom, and school features associated with learning gains to inform educational policy decisions
  • Compare educational quality in a global context using an alternative outcome measure
