The Launch of the ICILS 2023 International Report and Results took place on Tuesday, 12 November at Aarhus University in Copenhagen. The event highlighted important new data and key findings from ICILS 2023.
The event began with welcome remarks by Professor Claus Holm, Dr. Thierry Rocher, and Ms. Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen from the European Commission, setting a positive tone for the day.
Mr. Julian Fraillon presented highlights from the ICILS 2023 International Report, followed by Dr. Dirk Hastedt, who shared key takeaways for policy and practice. The full report, containing many useful insights and findings, can be accessed here.
Some key findings showed that:
- On average, almost half of eighth-grade students reached at least Computer and Information Literacy (CIL) proficiency Level 2—the level at which students demonstrate an understanding of computer use basics.
- CIL achievement has shown a tendency to decrease between the 2013 and 2023 cycles of ICILS. No countries that participated in ICILS 2013 and ICILS 2023 experienced an increase in average CIL achievement from one cycle to the next.
- Female students performed statistically significantly higher in 28 participating countries, and there were no participating countries where male students outperformed females in CIL achievement.
- On average, across participating countries, two-thirds of students are operating at proficiency Level 2 or higher for Computational Thinking (CT)—the level at which students can engage with real-world problems to plan and implement computer-based solutions.
- Achievement levels are consistently higher, on average, for students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds, for students who speak the language of the test at home, and for students from families without an immigrant background.
The event concluded with a panel discussion, focusing on what countries can learn from ICILS 2023, with thoughtful contributions from Nordic country representatives. We are grateful for the insights shared by Professor Päivi Häkkinen, Dr. Linda Manilla, Professor Greta Björk Gudmundsdottir, and Professor Jeppe Bundsgaard.
IEA thanks and congratulates all those who worked towards the success of the ICILS 2023 International Report.
