IEA and the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center at Boston College is pleased to announce the release of a new TIMSS Insights report that delves into students’ environmental knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, using data from TIMSS 2023. As environmental sustainability rises on the global agenda, this report contributes valuable findings to support efforts in education for sustainable development.
Building on the TIMSS 2023 International Results, the report offers a deeper examination of how environmental awareness is understood and measured in an international assessment context. It begins by outlining how environmental awareness was conceptualized and operationalized in TIMSS 2023, followed by a presentation of cross-country comparisons in students’ environmental knowledge. Disaggregated analyses highlight key differences by gender, home resource availability, and school geographic location.
A major innovation in this report is the use of multiple-group latent class analyses (MG-LCAs), which uncover meaningful patterns across student, parent, teacher, and school data. These analyses reveal varied environmental attitudes and support structures that shape student learning and behavior.
The report concludes with actionable insights and recommendations to guide future research and policy efforts in promoting environmental awareness through international education data.
