The 67th General Assembly (GA) Meeting has drawn to a close following a productive week of presentations, discussions, and collaborative decision-making on the future of IEA’s work.
Hosted by the Educational Research Institute (IBE), the 67th annual meeting of the GA took place from 03 October to 08 October 2026 at the hotel Verte, in Warsaw, Poland.
Each year, IEA GA representatives come together to review the progress of IEA activities, consider key developments affecting international large-scale assessments (ILSAs), and discuss priorities for the year ahead.
Sharing insights and perspectives
This year, a special highlight of the week was a series of three sessions on Tuesday that underlined the critical importance of the work being done, and to be done, by education researchers around the world.
Our hosts from the IBE gave an inspiring presentation entitled Evidence-based education in Poland. What we do and why it matters. An insightful group discussion was held on the inclusion and exclusion of students in IEA assessments. Finally, a vibrant panel discussion considered how crucial collaboration between partners is in efforts to ameliorate data gaps and strengthen education quality across low- and middle-income countries.
IEA is very grateful to Albert Nsengiyumva from the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), Ramya Vivekanandan from Global Partnership for Education (GPE), and Yanhong Zhang from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) for their participation in the panel, and their bringing of invaluable outside perspectives to the 2026 General Assembly.
Celebrating research and new ideas
Throughout the week, study directors provided updates on IEA’s core suite of international studies: TIMSS, PIRLS, ICCS, ICILS, and LaNA. Additionally, the GA received an update on the combined TIMSS and PIRLS 2031 cycle, an alignment that occurs only once every 20 years.
This General Assembly meeting was also an opportunity to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the IEA Research for Education series. Series editor Seamus Hegarty reflected on the development of the series over the past decade and its contribution to research using IEA data.
The GA also held presentations on the work of IEA R&D Fund awardees and heard directly from the 2026 Bruce H. Choppin Memorial Award winner, Dr. Natalia López-Hornickel, who presented her award-winning doctoral research Latin American Adolescents’ Attitudes toward Gender Equity and the Mechanisms Underlying It: A Multilevel Latent-Class Framework.
IEA is grateful to the IBE for hosting the 67th General Assembly and for its support throughout the organisation of the meeting. We also thank all GA members, presenters, and guests for their active participation and contributions to a memorable and productive week in Warsaw.
IEA looks forward to welcoming the General Assembly to Cape Town, South Africa, in 2027 for the 68th annual meeting.
