IEA Research for Education Series Celebrates 10 Years

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the IEA Research for Education series; a milestone celebrated at the annual IEA General Assembly (GA) this morning.

The anniversary session was led by Dr. Seamus Hegarty, one of the series editors. Seamus reflected on the development of the IEA Research for Education series over the past decade and took some time to consider how things are likely to change in the next ten years:

"When we started the series 10 years ago, this was the main source of secondary analyses on IEA datasets. This has changed, for example with the introduction of Insights reports from the international study centers, IEA's R&D grants and other activity. We need to be conscious that things have changed in the past decade.

We also think about how difficult it is to extrapolate to how things will develop 10 years from now, especially with the growing influence of AI - we don't know what the norms will be then.

For now though, we keep going. We have something that is useful, and is greatly regarded. We must proceed with a very open mind, alert to the possibility of a very different future."

The origins of the Research for Education series

The IEA Research for Education series was established in 2016 to make greater use of IEA's unique body of data and encourage international dialogue on education policy and technical evaluation procedures.

Over the past 10 years, the series has grown into an established body of scholarship covering a wide range of educational issues and methodological approaches. Each volume draws on IEA study data gathered across diverse national and international contexts, giving researchers opportunities to explore IEA datasets in greater depth.

18 volumes and more than 1,000 citations

The IEA Research for Education series has seen the publication of 18 volumes since the inaugural book release in 2016. The books have been collectively downloaded millions of times and are reported to have over 1,000 combined citations.

The series' most accessed and cited volumes include:
